LEAMINGTON SPA

Mentioned in the Domesday Book it was then called Lamintone, a 240 acre manor with two mills. It then passed into the varying hands of the Earl of Warwick, the Bishop of Coventry & Lichfield and in 1160 to Geoffrey de Clinton, who also founded Kenilworth Castle and priory. His son presented the manor to the Prior of Kenilworth who then held it for 300 years.

Its name developed via Leminton to Lemyngton Priors in 1533 and eventually to today's spelling. The current full title of Royal Leamington Spa was gained by permission of Queen Victoria in July 1838.
